Dathathreya is all the great trinity rolled into one form. He is pursued by the four Vedas in the form of dogs.
It is a tale that Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva desired to test the purity of Sadhvi Anasooya and requested her to serve them food in the nakedness. She created them into babies and took them together. That is one story about the origin of Dattatreya.
In the states of Karnataka and Maharashtra, there is a large number of people who idolize Dattatreya.

श्रीदत्तात्रेयकवचम्
श्रीपादः पातु मे पादावूरू सिद्धासनस्थितः ।
पायाद्दिगम्बरो गुह्यं नृहरिः पातु मे कटिम् ॥ १॥
shreepaadah' paatu me paadaavooroo siddhaasanasthitah' .
paayaaddigambaro guhyam nri'harih' paatu me kat'im .. 1..
Let my feet be protected by Sri Pada,
Let he who sits o the throne of Sidhas protect my thigh,
Let him who clothes with the direction protect my private parts,
Let God Nara Simha protect my hip.
नाभिं पातु जगत्स्रष्टोदरं पातु दलोदरः ।
कृपालुः पातु हृदयं षड्भुजः पातु मे भुजौ ॥ २॥
naabhim paatu jagatsrasht'odaram paatu dalodarah' .

Let my stomach be protected by the creator of the world,
Let my bone marrow be protected by he who bears the conch,
Let the kind-hearted one protect my heart,
Let the six-handed one protect my arms.
स्रक्कुण्डीशूलडमरुशङ्खचक्रधरः करान् ।
पातु कण्ठं कम्बुकण्ठः सुमुखः पातु मे मुखम् ॥ ३॥

paatu kant'ham kambukant'hah' sumukhah' paatu me mukham .. 3..
Let him who holds pitcher, trident, drum, conch, and wheel protect my arms,
Let my neck be protected by he who has a conch-like neck,
Let the pleasant-faced one protect my face.
जिह्वां मे वेदवाक्पातु नेत्रे मे पातु दिव्यदृक् ।
नासिकां पातु गन्धात्मा पातु पुण्यश्रवाः श्रुती ॥ ४॥
jihvaam me vedavaakpaatu netre me paatu divyadri'k .
naasikaam paatu gandhaatmaa paatu punyashravaah' shrutee .. 4..
Let he who talks Vedas protect my tongue,
Let my eyes be protected by the one with divine vision,
Let the soul of sandal protect my nose,
Let my ears be protected by he who has a blessed name.
ललाटं पातु हंसात्मा शिरः पातु जटाधरः ।
कर्मेन्द्रियाणि पात्वीशः पातु ज्ञानेन्द्रियाण्यजः ॥ ५॥
lalaat'am paatu hamsaatmaa shirah' paatu jat'aadharah' .
karmendriyaani paatveeshah' paatu jnyaanendriyaanyajah' .. 5..
Let the one whose soul is in the high step of meditation protect my forehead,
Let my head be protected by the one who has matted hair,
Let my body parts do actions be protected by God,
Let my parts participating in intellect, be protected by he who is not born.
सर्वान्तरोऽन्तकरणं प्राणान्मे पातु योगिराट् ।
उपरिष्टादधस्ताच्च पृष्ठतः पार्श्वतोऽग्रजः ॥ ६॥
sarvaantaro'ntakaranam praanaanme paatu yogiraat' .
uparisht'aadadhastaachcha pri'sht'hatah' paarshvato'grajah' .. 6..
Let the king of sages protect all types of my inside and soul,
And Over and above whatever is left as well as what is near and in the front.
अन्तर्बहिश्च मां नित्यं नानारूपधरोऽवतु ।
वर्जितं कवचेनाव्यात्स्थानं मे दिव्यदर्शनः ॥ ७॥
antarbahishcha maam nityam naanaaroopadharo'vatu .
varjitam kavachenaavyaatsthaanam me divyadarshanah' .. 7..
Let him who can take any form protect daily what is inside and what is out,
And let the God with the divine vision protect whatever has been left out by this armor.
राजतः शत्रुतो हिंस्राद् दुष्प्रयोगादितोऽघतः ।
आधिव्याधिभयार्तिभ्यो दत्तात्रेयः सदावतु ॥ ८॥
raajatah' shatruto himsraad dushprayogaadito'ghatah' .
aadhivyaadhibhayaartibhyo dattaatreyah' sadaavatu .. 8..
Let Dathathreya guard me against king , enemy,
Cruel people and those who misuse power,
As well as worry, disease , fear, and greed.
धनधान्यगृहक्षेत्रस्त्रीपुत्रपशुकिङ्करान् ।
ज्ञातींश्च पातु नित्यं मेऽनसूयानन्दवर्धनः ॥ ९॥
dhanadhaanyagri'hakshetrastreeputrapashukinkaraan .
jnyaateemshcha paatu nityam me'nasooyaanandavardhanah' .. 9..
Let The god who increases the happiness of Anasuya,
Protect my money, grains, homr , field, wife, son, cattle, and servants,
As well as all the members of my clan daily.
बालोन्मत्तपिशाचाभो द्युनिट्सन्धिषु पातु माम् ।
भूतभौतिकमृत्युभ्यो हरिः पातु दिगम्बरः ॥ १०॥
baalonmattapishaachaabho dyunit'sandhishu paatu maam .
bhootabhautikamri'tyubhyo harih' paatu digambarah' .. 10..
From powerful exuberant devils, bad paramours,let the saint protect me,
Let The Hari who dresses by the sky,
Protect the physical and spiritual aspects as well as death.
य एतद्दत्तकवचं सन्नह्याद्भक्तिभावितः ।
सर्वानर्थविनिर्मुक्तो ग्रहपीडाविवर्जितः ॥ ११॥
ya etaddattakavacham sannahyaadbhaktibhaavitah' .
sarvaanarthavinirmukto grahapeed'aavivarjitah' .. 11..
He who wears this armor with the spirit of devotion,
Will get rid of all dangers as well as the problems caused by planets.
भूतप्रेतपिशाचाद्यैर्देवैरप्यपराजितः ।
भुक्त्वात्र दिव्यभोगान्स देहान्ते तत्पदं व्रजेत् ॥ १२॥
bhootapretapishaachaadyairdevairapyaparaajitah' .
bhuktvaatra divyabhogaansa dehaante tatpadam vrajet .. 12..
Devils, ghosts, bad wandering souls as well as gods with enmity would get defeated,
And they would enjoy divine pleasures and at the end, they would reach you.
